Andrew Parsons Top Executive

In my roles at the senior executive and executive levels I’ve been told on multiple occasions by recruiters, leaders, and mentors that I’m a ‘unicorn’. Thanks to working in diverse fields and building expertise from the ground up across a varied career in the private and public sector, I much prefer the term ‘multi-skilled’. All supported by a career tested and proven under extreme conditions, with a rolling record of success.

My ‘failures’ – invaluable lessons that empower, drive, teach, deliver improvement, and shape my future success. Win, lose, or draw – I’m still learning and improving personally and professionally by embracing all three.

I don’t think it makes me a ‘unicorn’. I think it simply means I have a lot of skills, experience, and capability to offer when leading, empowering, growing, and achieving alongside a team (workforce and leadership) in a reciprocal and complementary environment.

Reporting directly to the Commissioner, I’ve been able to make a real impact on growing the fire service's brand, media exposure; and, social media presence via Facebook and Twitter (recognised for ‘best practice’ in 2015 by Twitter). Key areas of achievement I’ve been particularly proud to develop and deliver: ‘LIVE’ HD video delivery from the field for bespoke use – internal or direct to television broadcasters, revamping the internal magazine into a flagship publication and communications product, integrating video content to be more dynamic and effective as a communications tool, designing the style guide for the agency; and, in the absence of a marketing function – deliver marketing success, especially for profiling the role of firefighter as a career choice for women and men. For example, in 2014, 7.7% of applicants identified as women. After the 2015 recruitment campaign, which I designed and drove the marketing strategy for with my teams, 19.9% of applicants identified as women. Title: National Communications Branch, Production and Design Company: Department of Immigration and Citizenship Company URL: https://www.linkedin.com/company/38637/ Industry: None Company Size: None Location: Canberra, ACT Country: None Employment Type: None Start At: 04-2006 Ends At: 11-2011 Description: The Immigration portfolio was an extremely challenging and equally rewarding part of my working career. Developing and producing the creative for national campaigns (all in-house), like: Harmony Day, Citizenship, Refugee Week; and, Settlement were career highlights. Seeing the department recognised as a pioneer leader in the use of YouTube within the public sector – testament to how powerful good content (all generated in-house) can not only save millions of dollars, it demonstrated traditional media and communications for government had changed. I worked on a number of counter terrorism projects in a time when social media and technology was on the cusp of rewriting the ‘rule book’ in times of crisis. Being exposed to that realisation also provided an opportunity to maximise content development through advertising and marketing to influence and change behaviours. Key achievements I remain very proud of: establishing the agency’s in-house use of broadcast production for media and marketing, delivering a anti-drowning safety campaign in 2005 that saw ‘zero’ drowning deaths achieved; and, in only a few weeks producing (filming and editing) a cinema ad *including direct buying the cinema screen time) to combat stolen motor vehicles to coincide with the national release of Star Wars Episode VI.
