Mariano Vazquez Leaders
Mariano Vazquez, as the Co-Founder & CT/SO at ELEM Biotech and Co-Leader of the Alya Dev Team, is a key figure in the field of Computational Mechanics, with a focus on its applications in the Biomedical realm at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). His expertise includes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computational Solid Mechanics (CSM), High-Performance Computing (HPC), Multi-physics, Cardiac Computational Modeling, and the Respiratory System. At BSC, Mariano is a master architect of ALYA, a Large-Scale Computational Mechanics code designed to solve multi-physics problems on supercomputers. Supervising a team of 35-40 researchers, PhD students, post-docs, and programming engineers, he plays a pivotal role in advancing computational mechanics research. Additionally, Mariano serves as the Applications Manager and member of the Executive Board at the Center of Excellence in Computational Biomedicine (CompBioMed). His research initiatives, including the development of algorithms and computer codes for computational mechanics, are executed on high-performance facilities like the MareNostrum IV supercomputer. A major focus is on preparing for the next generation of supercomputers, leading to ongoing research in new algorithms and codes for advanced architectures. At ELEM Biotech, Mariano envisions a technological revolution where Virtual Humans become the standard for medical testing and in silico clinical trials. The company, a spinoff from BSC, is dedicated to creating cutting-edge supercomputer-based patient modeling and simulation solutions deployed in the cloud. This effort aims to assist MedTech and Pharma companies in optimizing products and providing clinicians with personalized treatment insights. BSC, where Mariano conducts his research, is Spain’s leading supercomputing center, specializing in High-Performance Computing. The center's mission encompasses offering supercomputing infrastructure and services to European and Spanish scientists, along with generating knowledge and technology for societal benefit. BSC is a prominent member of the European research infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) and manages the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES).
