Matthew Varacallo MD is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in
sports medicine and total joint reconstruction practicing in western Pennsylvania in the Penn Highlands Healthcare System based out of DuBois, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Varacallo obtained his Medical Degree (MD) from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency training at Drexel College of Medicine / Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Varacallo is currently the head team physician and head team Orthopedic Surgeon for Clarion University (NCAA Division I and II athletics), Penn State Branch campus athletics, and DuBois Dream, a competitive, up-and-coming organization that competes in the North American Basketball League (NABL). In addition, the DuBois Dream has been an annual participant in the widely popular basketball charity event (“The Basketball Tournament (TBT)”) since 2016. TBT is annually televised on ESPN and features many of the top former and current professional basketball players (former NBA players, current overseas, and high-level division I talents) competing in a March Madness NCAA-style format for the ultimate prize of $2-million dollars being awarded to the national champion and the respective team’s designated charity associations. Notable athletic affiliates include Demarcus Cousins, Chris Paul, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby. In 2016, he competed as a played against Dermarr Johnson, the former sixth overall pick in the NBA draft. Dr. Varacallo transitioned to the coaching staff in 2017 and now serves as the head team physician/surgeon.
Dr. Varacallo is currently in practice with his brother, Dr. Chris Varacallo, who is fellowship trained in Primary Care Sports Medicine. The two brothers have teamed up to create a unique combination to provide comprehensive (operative and nonoperative) Sports Medicine and Orthopedic conditions in affiliation with the Penn Highlands Healthcare system.
